Going large: global fast-food chains

Since opening its first restaurant in San Bernardino, California, in 1948, McDonald’s has been spreading the fast-food gospel. Its 36,000 restaurants in 119 countries generated sales of over $27 billion in 2014. But lately the company has been through a rough patch, thanks in part to stiffer competition from other chains. Though McDonald’s dominates in western Europe, KFC, known for its fried chicken, reigns supreme in China and much of Asia. Its parent company, Yum Brands, has been expanding rapidly in China (a business it plans to spin off). The number of KFC outlets there has increased by 59% over the past five years, surpassing the American total. But on outlets alone Subway is the new bastion of American fast-food culture. The privately owned company, founded in 1965, has 43,000 restaurants in 108 countries and is now the leader across much of Asia, the Americas, and in America itself.​
