Trumped and Berned: New Hampshire

A billionaire who would ban Muslims from America and torture suspected terrorists won the New Hampshire Republican primary by a double-digit margin. Donald Trump’s victory was greeted by supporters chanting “build a wall”—referring to his pledge to seal the southern border and send the bill to Mexico. Disastrously for Republican bosses, no establishment champion emerged from the pack. Governor John Kasich of Ohio, a pragmatist with few fans in the mostly Southern states coming next, held a solid second-place lead (with Senator Ted Cruz, the Texan hardliner who won the Iowa caucuses, trailing). Voters snubbed Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a young Cuban-American with an inspiring life-story, after a stilted TV debate performance. Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton was thumped by her left-wing rival, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, notably among young voters. The next states up have many black and Hispanic Democrats, who have traditionally been pro-Clinton. These are not traditional times.
