France in mourning: Nice under attack

Last night France celebrated its annual Bastille Day holiday; today it wakes up grieving. Late on July 14th at least 80 people were killed and over 100 injured in the southern coastal town of Nice when a lorry rammed into crowds of revellers, zig-zagging for 2km (1.2 miles) along its Promenade des Anglais, apparently to kill as many as possible. The heavy toll makes it the second-worst terrorist assault in France’s recent history. Attacks by jihadists in November killed 130 in and around Paris. Soon after François Hollande, the president, said the country was at war with Islamic State and declared a state of emergency. It was to be lifted on July 26th. In an address to the nation last night he said he would extend it by three months and mobilise an additional 10,000 security forces; he is also calling up military reserves to support police at France’s borders.
